DPL TRAINING WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Basic DPL Workshop
This two-day workshop provides hands-on instruction in DPL. The format is an interactive blend of presentations, computer case studies and group discussion. The focus is on teaching you how to build models, generate analyses and interpret results. The workshop covers how to integrate financial models built in Excel with DPL models. We also discuss good modelling habits and how to build models that are easy to modify, document, test and debug. In addition to being DPL experts, the workshop leaders are consultants with 8 plus year's experience in using DPL to analyse decisions and value assets in a variety of industries.

Who Should Attend
The Basic DPL workshop is intended for those who wish to use DPL to build and analyse decision analysis models, risk analysis models and/or real option valuation models.

Suggested Prerequisites
Familiarity with risk analysis, decision analysis or real option valuation is helpful. No DPL experience is required, but participants should be familiar with Microsoft Excel and Windows.

Workshop Topics
  • Representing decisions with influence diagrams and symmetric decision trees
  • Analyzing decisions using decision policy trees and risk profiles
  • Understanding DPL's policy summary
  • Using strategy tables
  • Calculating the value of information and control
  • Conducting sensitivity analyses using tornado and rainbow diagrams
  • Integrating spreadsheet models into DPL decision models

    Advanced DPL Workshop
This one-day workshop provides hands-on instruction in the advanced features of DPL. The format is an interactive blend of presentations, computer case studies and group discussion. The focus is on teaching you how to make the most of the advanced analysis features and processing power of DPL. We discuss converting Excel spreadsheets into DPL programs for improved performance.

    Who Should Attend
The Advanced DPL workshop is for those who have taken the Basic DPL workshop or have substantial experience with DPL, and want to bring their modelling skills to the next level.

    Suggested Prerequisites
Participants should be familiar with building models, conducting analyses and interpreting results in DPL, either through taking the Basic DPL workshop, or equivalent experience.

    Workshop Topics
  • Representing complex decisions with asymmetric decision trees
  • Analyzing very large models with discrete tree simulation
  • Understanding and using DPL's two-way sensitivity analysis features
  • Using the time series percentiles feature
  • Converting Excel spreadsheets for improved performance
  • Modelling multiple objectives
  • Incorporating risk attitude

    DPL Fault Tree Workshop
This one-day workshop provides hands-on instruction in building and analysing fault trees using DPL. The format is an interactive blend of presentations, computer case studies and group discussion.

    Who Should Attend
The Fault Tree workshop is intended for those who are familiar with DPL and want to learn how to build and analyse fault trees.

    Suggested Prerequisites
Participants should be familiar with building models, conducting analyses and interpreting results in DPL, such as through taking the Basic DPL workshop. Basic DPL and DPL Fault Tree are usually taught together as a three day workshop.

    Workshop Topics
  • Fault tree building blocks
  • Fault tree modules
  • Using time series
  • Incorporating the judgement of multiple experts
  • Minimal cut sets and circuit diagrams
  • Partial derivatives

    Custom Application Workshops
Modelling is as much art as science, and knowing how to use a tool is different than knowing where to start when confronted with a blank screen. To help you see how DPL can be used in your area of interest, we can custom design a workshop to your specification. Application workshops can be tailored to a particular industry, functional area, or both. Examples areas include:
  • Strategic investments in oil & gas
  • Evaluating your pharmaceutical R&D pipeline
  • Life cycle management for generation assets in electric power
  • Reaching common ground: strategic decisions in early stage companies
